I only wrote this review in hopes that he might read it and correct the mistake in any books not already in print. It's almost impossible to find any book that doesn't have a typo or two so I can't complain too much, I just wish it hadn't been a misplaced numberin the puzzle which I suspect it was. It's a decent book, certainly worth the price. (He said the logic was counting, which is a very simple technique, but I couldn't figure how he came up with the number he placed.) That step was easy to follow but I failed to figure out the logic he used to make his deduction. His steps were the same as mine until the third to the last step. His explanations are a little difficult but not impossible to follow. The author does give a step by step solution for every puzzle. I double checked my entries several times to make ertain I hadn't made a mistake. The Sudoku solver said it could not be solved because it had more than one solution. But when I tried puzzle #26, which was rated diabolical, I got close to solving the puzzle but then got stuck and couldn't figure it out.Īfter several tries over three days, I finally gave up and entered the cells I had solved into a step by step Sudoku solver. I was able to solve every puzzle from moderate to very hard. Then I started solving the puzzles in the book. I took my time and made certain I understood all the solving techniques, many of which I had already mastered. I would class myself as better than average at solving Sudoku puzzles but not an expert. These provide in themselves a valuable aid to mastering the techniques. A novel feature is that the puzzles come with fully reasoned solutions and detailed explanations which, by taking you through all the logical steps, show exactly how each puzzle was solved and what solving techniques were used to do so. These explanatory pages are followed by 30 graded puzzles, ranging from Easy to Diabolical, with which to test the techniques described in the book. There are 84 pages to explain the mysteries of scanning, matching pairs, twins, triplets and quads, pointing and claiming, the use of rectangles and other 4-sided figures, X-wings and X-Y wings, swordfish, jellyfish, turbot fish, and chains and loops. For solvers already able to complete puzzles graded as Easy or Moderate, but who find themselves up against a brick wall when faced with more difficult puzzles, the book describes and demonstrates a selected range of techniques which will enable them to go further and solve all the puzzles likely to be encountered in newspapers or puzzle books, from Easy through Hard and Very Hard to Diabolical. For beginners it explains what Sudoku is, and deals fully with the basic solving techniques. Whether you are a complete beginner or have already acquired some solving skills, this book will be extremely helpful.
